Sri Lanka combines a major international gateway with a smaller airport closer to central Colombo, giving private charter passengers more than one way to plan their arrival.

For most international journeys, Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB / VCBI) is the primary option. Colombo International Airport Ratmalana (RML / VCCC) can be useful for certain private and corporate movements because it is significantly closer to Colombo, but its operating profile is more restrictive.

The right choice depends on more than road distance.

Arrival time, aircraft suitability, immigration and customs availability, fuel, handling, weather and the passenger’s final destination all need to support the proposed itinerary.

Which airport should you use for a private charter to Sri Lanka?#

For travellers heading to Colombo, the main comparison is between Bandaranaike International Airport and Colombo International Airport Ratmalana.

Bandaranaike offers the stronger 24-hour international operating profile. Ratmalana is much closer to central Colombo but has more limited airport, customs and fuel availability.

Ratmalana is approximately 14 km south of Colombo and is actively positioned by Airport and Aviation Services Sri Lanka for international corporate-jet traffic. However, its current AIP publishes airport administration during a defined daytime window, while customs, immigration and fuelling are available HJ.

Bandaranaike International Airport: CMB#

Bandaranaike International Airport will normally be the first airport considered for an international private charter to Sri Lanka.

Its main operational advantage is availability.

The airport publishes H24:

This makes CMB particularly practical for long-haul journeys, late arrivals, early departures and itineraries where schedule flexibility is important.

Bandaranaike may be the stronger choice when:

The airport is approximately 32 kilometres from Colombo. The passenger’s exact destination and road conditions should therefore be considered when comparing CMB with Ratmalana.

Colombo International Airport Ratmalana: RML#

Ratmalana presents a different proposition.

Its principal passenger advantage is location.

Airport and Aviation Services Sri Lanka describes the airport as being close to Colombo’s commercial district and specifically identifies international corporate jets as part of its operating strategy. The airport also highlights its proximity to business centres, embassies, hospitals and government institutions.

This can make Ratmalana worth reviewing for:

• Business travellers with appointments in Colombo
• Government or diplomatic journeys
• Passengers staying in southern Colombo
• Certain medical-travel movements
• Time-sensitive daytime visits
• Domestic connections within Sri Lanka
• Aircraft that meet the airport’s operating requirements

However, shorter road access does not automatically make Ratmalana the better airport.

The current AIP publishes airport administration between 0030 and 1230 UTC daily, equivalent to approximately 06:00–18:00 Sri Lanka time. Customs, immigration, health and fuelling are published HJ, meaning their availability is linked to daylight operating periods rather than being available around the clock.

The airport’s published traffic and flight procedures also differ from those at Bandaranaike, so aircraft and operational acceptance need to be assessed specifically for the proposed movement.

A late-evening international arrival that works easily at CMB may therefore not work at Ratmalana.

CMB or Ratmalana: which is more practical?#

The decision should be based on the complete journey, not only the shortest drive.

CMB may be more practical when:#

• The arrival or departure is at night
• The aircraft or operation requires the main international airport
• H24 customs and immigration are important
• Fuel flexibility is a priority
• The passenger programme could change at short notice
• The final destination is north of central Colombo
• Weather or airport operating requirements favour CMB

Ratmalana may be worth reviewing when:#

• The flight operates within the airport’s practical operating window
• The aircraft can use the airport
• International arrival requirements can be confirmed
• The passenger’s destination is central or southern Colombo
• The journey is particularly time-sensitive on the ground
• The traveller is heading directly to a Colombo hospital or business district

However, its more limited customs, immigration and fuel operating windows mean proximity alone should not determine the charter.

A patient arriving on an international flight late at night may still require Bandaranaike because of the wider H24 operating capability.

Medical travel is not the same as MEDEVAC#

This distinction should be clear.

A planned medical-travel charter may be appropriate for a medically stable passenger travelling for treatment, consultation, surgery, rehabilitation or another scheduled healthcare requirement.

A MEDEVAC or air-ambulance mission is a specialist medical operation for a patient whose condition requires dedicated medical equipment, clinical supervision or a medically configured aircraft.

The required solution depends on the patient’s condition and medical assessment.

ASM Charter is not currently accepting dedicated MEDEVAC or air-ambulance bookings. Medically stable passenger charter requests may be assessed individually, while specialist missions must be operated by an appropriately approved medical-flight provider.

Arrival formalities for Sri Lanka#

Foreign travellers should check the current Sri Lanka Electronic Travel Authorisation requirements before departure.

The official Department of Immigration and Emigration ETA system states that, with effect from 25 May 2026, nationals of 40 countries are eligible for a free-of-charge tourist ETA for 30 days.

Importantly, free of charge does not mean that no travel authorisation is required.

The immigration authority states that foreign nationals—including travellers from the 40 countries benefiting from the free ETA—are generally required to obtain an ETA before arrival, subject to the published exemptions.

Passengers should therefore check their nationality and travel purpose through the official ETA system rather than assuming that a visa-fee waiver means visa-free entry without prior authorisation.
