Africa Airport Expansion Summit

African Airports – A path to a brighter future

In Latest News and Events by admin

The recently concluded 6th Africa Airport Expansion Summit in Addis Ababa provided an excellent opportunity for key players in the aviation industry to come together. Government officials, investors, civil aviation authorities, airport management groups, and service providers gathered to discuss the future of airport development across the African continent. According to IATA reports, Africa will host eight of the ten fastest-growing aviation markets by 2034. This rapid growth in passenger traffic to African destinations underscores the urgent need for coordinated airport infrastructure development.

Vito Gomes – ASM CEO

As a key participant in these discussions, ASM’s CEO and Founder, Mr. Vito Gomes, raised several thought-provoking questions for the participants and government representatives. He acknowledged the critical role aviation plays in driving economic success across Africa. However, he also pointed out that, for airport expansions to bring maximum value, they must address the needs of all stakeholders in the demand and supply network.

Moreover, Gomes highlighted the significant role that global aviation solution providers, like ASM, play in the industry. These companies serve all segments, from international airlines to general aviation and charter operators. Moving forward, African skies must be equipped to accommodate each of these segments. In doing so, the continent can boost both business travel and tourism, creating a more robust aviation market for the future.

In Vito’s view, there were 3 special areas to focus on:

1. Improving connectivity between African countries has long been a major stumbling block in developing pan-African tourism and business opportunities. The recently agreed Single African Air Transport Market (SAATM) agreement marks a step in the right direction, but its implementation must be swift.

2. Most African hubs lack dedicated infrastructure to cater to high-value VIP/CIP travelers. Investing in state-of-the-art facilities with time-saving, integrated check-in, immigration, and exit processes is crucial to boosting this lucrative segment.

3. Civil Aviation Authorities across Africa must facilitate non-scheduled and private aircraft movements by providing 24/7 services staffed with responsive personnel. This will enable quicker permits and navigation, enhancing the overall efficiency of air travel on the continent.

Airport Infrastructure

Mr. Gomes suggested that the accelerated growth of airport infrastructure should align with the expansion of international and local airlines, as well as ground and flight support services infrastructure. He pointed out that, at this stage, inefficient links between African countries have created uncertainty about when and how all major stakeholders will engage in these developments.

Vito’s comments at the Summit raised awareness and sparked discussions among Africa’s policymakers about the urgent need for a more holistic, pan-African aviation development program. We hope that these valid and constructive suggestions will resonate with policymakers and drive the development of a bright, efficient, and comprehensive future for aviation in Africa.
