“Real giving lies in making a difference in another person’s life, or the life of a community, or in the journey of a nation.” – Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum

Inspired by the words of his highness Sheikh Mohammed, ASM celebrated Ramadan’s spirit of giving at beautiful Zanzibar.

Experiencing the Spirit of Ramadan in Zanzibar’s Stone Town

In Zanzibar, where over 99% of the population practices Islam, Ramadan is far more than a holiday. Here, it represents a way of life, woven deeply into the cultural fabric of this island. For the people of Zanzibar, Ramadan is not only about fasting; it’s a time for spiritual growth, prayer, charity, and connection with others.

Our team recently immersed ourselves in Zanzibar’s unique Ramadan customs, experiencing the month’s humility and grace. We began our journey in Stone Town, Zanzibar’s historic heart, known for its vibrant history and deep-rooted traditions. There, we visited remote villages, spent time with locals, and engaged in meaningful conversations. We saw firsthand how Ramadan brings people together in acts of kindness and reflection.

Throughout our journey, we met with community members who emphasized the importance of humanity during this time. In Zanzibar, Ramadan inspires people to reach out to orphans, widows, and those who are specially-abled. Together with the locals, we prayed for their health and happiness, aiming to spread hope and encouragement. The importance of charity resonated in each community, reminding us that Ramadan here is truly a time for giving.

We also joined the efforts to support the less-privileged by distributing food essentials in several villages. Families welcomed us with open arms, and their gratitude filled each moment with warmth and purpose. The sense of community and compassion during Ramadan in Zanzibar is truly inspiring. The people’s generosity reflects their deep commitment to supporting each other, a value that is central to life on the island.

Experiencing Ramadan in Zanzibar reminded us that this sacred month is about so much more than refraining from food—it is about humility, selflessness, and creating a kinder, more compassionate world.
